The head of the Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Waidi Shaibu, has instructed soldiers to enhance security at vital facilities in the Niger Delta area.

He mentioned that the charge was required due to renewed worries about oil theft and pipeline sabotage, which still pose a risk to the country’s crude oil production and income.

Shaibu delivered the briefing during his first visit to the 6 Division, Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt on Friday, as he spoke to the troops.

He mentioned that it is the duty of the military to safeguard essential national resources from theft and damage, considering the adverse effects these events could have on the country’s economy.

Shaibu stated that the Nigerian Army is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of soldiers throughout the nation, calling it a top concern.

Your role here is crucial in safeguarding essential national infrastructure, and when you perform this task effectively, it will have a beneficial effect on the nation’s economy.

Therefore, you must approach your work with great seriousness, showing discipline, commitment, and dedication to the objectives of this department. While you do so, rest assured that I will handle your well-being matters, which are my highest priority.

Some of the concerns brought up by your Commanders were resolved right away, such as the matter of housing, where we have given approval for the building of more housing, the restoration of specific areas, and the finishing of some current projects.

He added, “Once this is completed, it will significantly help in addressing some of the housing issues that exist here.”

Regarding the quality of education for your children, this is currently under consideration, and in return, we expect you to fulfill your responsibilities with awareness. Therefore, pay attention to your officers, as they will direct you and lead you properly.

Typically, I visit different divisions to meet with officers and soldiers and engage with them, ensuring their combat preparedness. Therefore, I am here in the 6th Division’s area of responsibility for my first operational visit to observe what the troops are doing, assess their challenges, and determine how we can assist them in carrying out their duties effectively.

I have reviewed some of the issues they have brought up; some were resolved right away, while others will be handled once we arrive in Abuja.

I want you to keep performing your duties with awareness. Your responsibilities here relate to safeguarding vital national infrastructure, which affects our economy, so when you carry out your job effectively, everything will be okay.

Our reporter notes that Nigeria’s crude oil production has increased considerably in recent years compared to previous levels, after the President issued instructions to heads of security agencies to stop acts of economic sabotage in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

According to official figures from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, oil production averaged approximately 1.7 to 1.8 million barrels per day in 2025.
