Inhabitants of Zugurma, located within the Mashegu local government area of Niger State, experienced fear on Monday after a peculiar missile-shaped item was found in a thicket close to their settlement.

As per local reports, the object, thought to look like a missile warhead, was observed by residents while they were engaged in normal activities in the region. Concerned about its look and possible risk, the locals promptly informed the security authorities.

A source from the community, who requested to remain anonymous, mentioned that the object was believed to be a missile part, with initial theories connecting it to a Tomahawk missile potentially launched by the United States near North-West Nigeria. Nevertheless, officials have not verified this statement.

Verifying the event, the Niger State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that the report was made on Monday, January 5, 2026, around 2:00 p.m.

“On 5th January, 2026, around 2pm, a report came in from the Zugurma region of Mashegu LGA stating that some residents in the area spotted an object believed to be a missile in the bush,” Abiodun mentioned.

He stated that police officers from the Ibbi Division quickly moved to the scene, secured the area, and limited entry to avoid any potential danger to the local people.

“The police officers arrived at the location, set up a perimeter around the missile, and secured it, while the EOD-CBRN team from the Command was sent out for examination, evaluation, and retrieval,” he further stated.

The EOD-CBRN unit, which is specifically trained to manage dangerous and explosive substances, has assumed control of the item for further analysis.

Abiodun mentioned that inquiries are currently underway to ascertain the specific details, source, and the manner in which the object came to be in the neighborhood.

“The product is being examined, and additional updates will be disclosed,” he said.

The authorities also urged locals to stay composed and keep informing the security services about any unusual items or activities as the inquiry progressed.
