Vice President Kashim Shettimahas reasserted the Federal Government’s determination to enhance and bolster the Armed Forces in order to address the security issues facing the nation.
Shettima provided assurance on Friday during a special Juma’at prayer at the National Mosque, marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
In a statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Shettima expressed high praise for deceased soldiers who gave their lives protecting Nigeria’s territorial boundaries, as well as for current personnel who protect the lives and property of citizens throughout the nation.
The Federal Government commemorates January 15 every year to recognize the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The military forces have recently changed the name of the event to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day,” previously known as “Armed Forces Remembrance Day,” to highlight its two-fold aim of recognizing active personnel and commemorating those who have died in service.
During the special prayers, the Vice President recognized the efforts of the military and other security forces, and conveyed confidence that, with the guidance of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria will experience lasting peace and growth.
“Our prayer is that Allah pardons the remaining deceased officers and soldiers, and may God provide their families with the strength to endure the irreplaceable losses,” Shettima stated.
He additionally sought heavenly protection and strength for the military to overcome the country’s security issues, stating belief that peace would eventually be achieved.
The Vice President added, ‘We ask the Almighty Allah to keep protecting and strengthening our military so they can overcome all the challenges facing our country. And, God willing, in due time, Nigeria will experience lasting peace and development.’
The National Day of the Armed Forces is observed across the country through prayers and events that pay tribute to active service members and recall those who died while performing their duties.
