On Monday, tech companies Apple and Google revealed a long-term collaboration that will enable Apple’s upcoming artificial intelligence features, such as its Siri assistant, to utilize Google’s Gemini technology.
The partnership represents a major change for Apple, which has historically created its main technologies internally.
A shared announcement stated that Apple chose Google’s artificial intelligence technology following a “thorough assessment” that concluded it offered “the most advanced base” for the smartphone company’s artificial intelligence goals.
The statement marks an unusual partnership between two firms that have historically battled in the smartphone industry, where Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms hold significant global influence.
Nevertheless, the two competitors have kept up a profitable collaboration for many years, with Google transferring billions of dollars each year to Apple to stay as the primary search engine on iPhones and other Apple products.
That setup has drawn attention from authorities, with the U.S. Department of Justice asserting in a competition law case that the agreement enables Google to sustain its dominance in search, although a judge ruled that the arrangement may proceed.
The financial aspects of the AI agreement were not disclosed.
Dan Ives from Wedbush Securities stated that the collaboration marked “a significant validation for Google” and served as “a crucial step” for Apple to align its AI strategy towards 2026 and later years.
Apple is said to have explored collaborations with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity as well.
The business co-established by Steve Jobs is widely seen as having faced challenges in implementing AI features within its offerings, and last month revealed that the leader of its artificial intelligence division has resigned.
Apple postponed the launch of an enhanced Siri digital assistant last year and is now expecting to release it later this year.
Companies such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, along with other technology competitors, have been continuously launching more advanced AI models and functionalities in a highly competitive effort to dominate the industry.
Although there is a partnership, Apple highlighted that its internal AI system, Apple Intelligence, will be responsible for operating the iPhones and iPads at the device level, upholding what it refers to as “industry-leading privacy standards.”
