Pakistan, January 12 — Google has taken down AI-generated Overviews for some health-related search results after an inquiry revealed that the summaries might confuse users by leaving out important details like age, gender, race, and country. As a result, people looking for medical information might no longer encounter AI-generated summaries for particular searches, thereby minimizing the chance of misunderstanding.

The inquiry pointed out that searches such as “what is the normal range for liver blood tests” and “liver function test ranges” once produced AI Overviews that did not offer tailored advice. Similar queries, like “LFT reference range,” continue to show AI summaries, indicating a partial rather than complete removal.

Tests carried out soon after the report verified that AI Overviews were no longer displayed for the specific searches, although Google still allows users to ask questions in AI Mode. Notably, the leading search results frequently now point users to news pieces discussing the removal, enhancing clarity regarding the change.

Google has not responded to specific removals but emphasized its continuous dedication to enhancing AI-powered features. Internal health experts examined the highlighted queries and determined that although the summaries were backed by credible sources, they might still be misunderstood without further context.

Vanessa Hebditch, the communications director for the British Liver Trust, viewed the removal as a cautious move, but also pointed out that it tackles just one specific problem. She warned that there are still significant risks associated with wider AI-produced medical information, which needs to be closely monitored.

The action shows Google’s increasing focus on precision and accountability in AI uses within the healthcare sector, maintaining a balance between technological progress and user security. As AI becomes more embedded in search functions, additional improvements are anticipated to avoid providing incorrect medical advice.
