Nigeria has made a major advancement in its maritime digital transformation by introducing the Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) through the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
The unveiling ceremony, held in Abuja, drew notable figures such as the Secretary to the Federal Government, Senator George Akume, and the Minister of Maritime and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola.
The ECMS is an online system created to improve the effectiveness and openness of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council’s activities.
The system will allow the council to streamline its operations, minimize documentation, and enhance its speed in addressing stakeholders.
In his comments, the SGF commended the Minister for his guidance that contributed to Nigeria’s recent inclusion in Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, referring to the success as a recognition of the nation’s growing international maritime influence.
He also praised Oyetola for offering strategic leadership in the marine and blue economy sector, highlighting that this guidance was crucial in the successful implementation of the ECMS by the country’s port economic authority. Senator Akume pointed out that the system would improve the efficiency of government operations, minimize bureaucratic delays, and assist in achieving the overall goals of transparency, accountability, and digital transformation within the public sector. Oyetola referred to the event as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s path toward a modern and technology-focused maritime administration. He mentioned that digital transformation is key to the Ministry’s plan to position Nigeria as a competitive and efficient maritime nation, fully matching the needs of a rapidly changing global trade landscape.
He stated that the theme, “Driving the Maritime and Blue Economy Sector through Digital Innovation,” highlights the importance of adopting new technologies that improve efficiency, accuracy, and organizational effectiveness.
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council’s Executive Secretary and CEO, Dr Akutah Pius Ukeyima, referred to the ECMS as a revolutionary instrument and a fundamental part of the Council’s digital transformation strategy.
He observed that the system was created to remove delays, manual document handling, and administrative obstacles that have affected public organizations for many years.
