Pakistan, January 14 – A key bridge spanning the Kurram River in Shewa tehsil of North Waziristan was demolished on Wednesday when unknown individuals placed explosives underneath it, cutting off an essential transportation route in the unstable region.

Local reports indicated that a strong explosion during the early morning hours damaged the bridge, causing disruption in road connections between Shewa and major towns such as Miranshah, Bannu, and nearby areas. The blast, which could be heard from many miles away, created anxiety among locals and heightened worries regarding the worsening situation of law and order in the region.

Law enforcement and security personnel sealed off the location shortly following the event and initiated an inquiry. Preliminary evaluations indicate a substantial quantity of explosive substance was involved. Officials have also submitted a report to higher-ranking authorities concerning rebuilding strategies and temporary alternative paths.

The collapse of the bridge is anticipated to create significant challenges for nearby communities, as the route had been a crucial passage for students, merchants, government workers, patients, and everyday travelers. The absence of this link has also disrupted access to medical care, regular commercial goods, and aid-related travel, compelling locals to take longer and more arduous routes.

Local reports indicated that security convoys sometimes crossed the bridge, leading to concerns that the attack might have been intended to destabilize the area. Tribal leaders criticized the explosion as a “brutal and dishonorable act” that mainly affects civilians who have faced years of warfare. Political figures also expressed worry, calling on the government to enhance security measures and safeguard essential infrastructure.

There has been a rise in attacks on infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past few months. In December, unidentified attackers damaged a bridge in Bannu district, and several explosions last month hit schools and public buildings in North Waziristan. Authorities mentioned that a full investigation into the attack that occurred on Wednesday is currently being conducted.
