A mobile app named “Are you dead” designed for individuals living alone has become popular in China, generating numerous downloads and extensive discussions on social media, leading the company to implement a subscription charge and rename it for an international audience.
The application known as Sileme in Chinese, which means “Are you dead?” in English, is described by its development team as “a lightweight safety tool designed for individuals living alone,” including students, solo office workers, or “anyone opting for a solitary lifestyle.”
The application allows users to designate an emergency contact and automatically alerts them if the user fails to check in through the app for a continuous number of days.
China could have as many as 200 million single-person households, with a rate of living alone surpassing 30%, according to the state-run newspaper Global Times.
Sileme announced on its official Weibo account on Tuesday that the company will introduce the global brand name Demumu in its upcoming new version.
It is already listed as Demumu on Apple’s paid app chart, where it is now ranked second, following a rise to the top earlier in the week.
“Thanks to all netizens for their enthusiastic support. We were originally just an unknown small team, co-founded and run independently by three people born after 1995,” Sileme said.
It mentioned on Sunday that it would introduce an eight yuan (US$1.15) payment plan to assist with rising expenses.
Internet users on social media platforms, including Weibo, urged Sileme not to alter its name, while others proposed alternatives such as “Are you alive,” “Are you online,” or “Are you there.”
Perhaps some conservative individuals find it difficult to accept,” noted a user, but it serves a useful role in terms of safety. “It will help unmarried people feel more comfortable in their lives.
