The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has taken steps to enhance its fighting power by entering into a purchase deal valued at approximately 1 billion baht for more VN1 wheeled armored vehicles from China, as part of the defense budget for the 2025 fiscal year.

Lieutenant General Natthaporn Khwan-yam, head of the Army Ordnance Department, met with Liu Jinkui, senior vice-president of China North Industries Corporation (Norinco), prior to jointly overseeing the signing of the agreement between the Thai and Chinese governments.

The agreement was finalized at Norinco’s office in Beijing, where Lt Gen Natthaporn represented Thailand, and Zhang Xin, Norinco’s chief representative in Thailand, signed for the Chinese state-owned defense company, which functions under the oversight of the Chinese government.

The agreement involves the purchase of more VN1 8×8 armored personnel carriers, finalizing the army’s intended acquisition plan within the existing budget period, according to reports.

The most recent acquisition occurs as there is growing focus on border security, especially along the Thai-Cambodian border.

The RTA states that the purchase is part of its long-term modernization strategy rather than a reaction to any specific event.
