TOKYO – On Friday, the Japanese government stated that it has requested X to implement actions against the modification and sexualization of images through the social media company’s artificial intelligence tool.

X has recently experienced a rise in AI-created posts featuring improperly modified images of real individuals. Given that tens of millions are reportedly using the platform in Japan, the government is also requesting the operator to submit a strategy for addressing this problem and may provide guidance under the AI law if improvements are not observed.

“We will speed up the discussions while securing the collaboration of the appropriate ministries and agencies,” stated the Minister for AI Strategy, Kimi Onoda, during a press briefing after a Cabinet meeting.

Headed by American businessman Elon Musk, X launched a generative AI application called “Grok” last year, enabling users to alter images through inputting commands.

The extensive production of fake sexual images of real individuals using the service has led to inquiries by various governments globally. This marks the initial disclosure of Japan’s reaction.

The most recent directive came from the Cabinet Office, which is responsible for AI-related laws, as it became worried about how easily false material can be produced and distributed.

False images of individuals could violate their rights, including the right of publicity or the right to protect their reputation.

Several nations, including Britain, Canada, and Malaysia, have also identified the matter as concerning.

In reply, X stated, “We act to eliminate high-priority violating content, such as Child Sexual Abuse Material and non-consensual nudity.”

Last year, the government also asked for enhancements to OpenAI’s video tool “Sora” concerning the production of videos that closely resemble Japanese anime.
