The organization behind the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, known as Wikimedia, has entered into data usage contracts with artificial intelligence companies. As discussions continue within the AI sector regarding the use of data without permission, more instances of AI companies providing appropriate payment for data usage are emerging.

On the 15th (local time), Wikimedia revealed that it has entered into new agreements with artificial intelligence firms, such as Amazon, Meta, and Perplexity. With these partnerships, the AI companies will utilize Wikipedia’s information to create and enhance their AI systems and cover the associated expenses.

Earlier, Wikimedia worked with businesses like Google, the startup Ecosia, Phlias, and Prolata. The latest agreements involve more companies. Wikimedia stated to CNBC, “Wikipedia’s information acts as the core element for AI chatbots, search engines, voice assistants, and similar technologies. The future of AI and technology firms is tied to supporting initiatives like Wikipedia, as it provides the human knowledge they depend on.”
