The Armed Forces Headquarters (AFH) recently held a Golf Kitty event in Abuja as part of the celebrations for the 2026 Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Day, an annual national occasion aimed at paying tribute to deceased heroes, injured personnel, and active-duty officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The gathering, which took place at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club located inside the Yar’Adua Barracks in Asokoro, united high-ranking military officials, former staff, and individuals from the golfing world in an environment marked by friendship, contemplation, and fair play.

The competition was included in wider celebratory events aimed at honoring the contributions of individuals who have fought, and are still fighting, to protect the country.

At the event, Defence Minister General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.) referred to the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as a serious and meaningful national ceremony.

He mentioned that the event is focused on honoring officers and soldiers who gave their ultimate sacrifice in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial unity, while also recognizing the bravery and dedication of those still serving.

I urge all Nigerians to keep supporting the Armed Forces and security agencies and strive for peace,” he stated. “Individuals who are still backing bandits, criminals, insurgents, and terrorists should cease immediately.

“As the old saying goes, a friend of a thief is also a thief. If you are seen with them on the battlefield, whatever befalls them will also befall you. Therefore, it is crucial for law-abiding Nigerians to promptly and effectively share information with security agencies,” he said.

As stated by the minister, the yearly remembrance highlights the strength, sacrifice, and dedication that characterize the military, enhancing national recognition and ongoing backing for the armed forces. He mentioned that sports like golf reflect fundamental military principles, such as physical health, mental sharpness, and preparedness, while also offering a way to build connections and encourage solidarity among military personnel.

Musa also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his ongoing backing of the military’s well-being and operational efficiency, and recognized the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff in promoting professionalism throughout the services.

In his statement, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, recognized the officers and soldiers of the Armed Forces for their commitment and sacrifices in protecting the country’s peace and security. He emphasized that the event provides Nigerians with a chance to consider the courage of those who have passed away and to pay respect to those currently serving, noting that national security is a shared duty.

Additionally, the Captain of the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, mentioned that it was a significant privilege for the club to welcome the Golf Kitty, noting that more than 100 golfers took part in the event.

Key moments of the event featured awards given to exceptional golfers, the distribution of memorabilia, and group photo sessions, celebrating Nigeria’s deceased and active military heroes. January 15 is commemorated each year by the Federal Government after the event was rebranded from Armed Forces Remembrance Day to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, highlighting its two-fold objective.
