The Somali military claimed to have stopped a major assault by al-Shabaab against a military installation in the Middle Shabelle area of southern Somalia, causing substantial damage to the insurgents.

The Somali National Army (SNA) reported that militants from al-Shabaab carried out an attack on government forces in the region of Jabad Godane, but were repelled following fighting. The military stated that it has now regained complete control over the area.

“Al-Shabaab faced a significant loss and many casualties,” the military stated, noting that security forces are carrying out an extensive operation to clear and secure the region and stop the militants from reorganizing or causing instability in the area.

A military official present at the location stated that government troops experienced casualties during the conflict. “Several of our soldiers were killed, but we managed to repel the al-Shabaab assault,” mentioned Second Lieutenant Rabiic, who spoke to Radio Shabelle via telephone from Middle Shabelle.

Al-Shabaab, affiliated with al-Qaeda, regularly attacks Somali military personnel and state facilities as part of its ongoing rebellion seeking to dismantle the government recognized by the international community.

The team did not promptly respond to the recent hostilities.

The Somali administration has increased its armed efforts against al-Shabaab in the past few months, mainly in the central and southern areas, with the declared goal of bringing back safety and safeguarding residents.
