The Confederation of African Football has imposed several penalties on Algeria and its athletes due to inappropriate behavior during and after the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 quarter-final match against Nigeria.

A statement released on Wednesday indicated that the CAF’s Disciplinary Committee met to discuss events from the Group-stage match on January 10, 2026, and made a number of rulings.

The decision of the CAF Disciplinary Board stated, “Luca Zidane, an Algerian player, will be suspended for two (2) CAF official matches with the Algeria national team due to misconduct.”

Temporarily ban Algeria’s player Rafik Belghali, who has played four (4) CAF official matches with the Algerian national team, for aggressive and threatening conduct towards the referee at the conclusion of the game.

Nevertheless, two (2) matches are put on hold for a probationary period lasting one (1) year, beginning from the date of this decision.

The Algerian Football Association (FAF) faced a number of penalties amounting to USD 100,000 due to the behavior of its players, staff, and fans.

These involve imposing a penalty of USD 5,000 on the Algerian Football Federation due to the behavior of the senior (“A”) national team, which received five (5) warnings (yellow cards) during the game, breaching Article 130(a) of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

Impose a penalty of $25,000 on the Algerian Football Federation because of the unacceptable conduct by its players and officials after the game, which tarnished the match’s reputation, violating sections 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

Charge the Algerian Football Federation with a penalty of $5,000 due to the use of smoke generators by their fans.

Additional penalties involve “a fine of USD 5,000 imposed on the Algerian Football Federation due to supporters throwing objects.”

Impose a penalty of $10,000 on the Algerian Football Federation for not adhering to safety protocols, as a result of their fans trying to breach the security barriers.

Charge the Algerian Football Federation with a penalty of $50,000 for the offensive and disrespectful actions (showing money) by their fans directed at the referees during the game.

The CAF did not impose any penalties on the Nigerian team concerning the game.

The event took place right after the final whistle of the game, during which the Super Eagles secured victory through goals that were contested by Algerian players and supporters, especially regarding a claimed missed penalty decision in their favor.

Social media videos depicted Algerian players clashing with officials and getting into physical fights, increasing tensions that also saw fans throwing objects and security failures.

As a reply, the FAF has stated it will challenge the penalties, contending that the punishments are excessive and requesting an examination of the match officials’ decisions.
