Buffalo BillsOwner Terry Pegula addressed the media on Wednesday morning during a surprising press conference, where he detailed the reasons behind firing Sean McDermott as head coach—yet this move has only led to further confusion.
In his most shocking disclosure, Pegula held McDermott and his coaching staff responsible for selecting the troubled wide receiver Keon Coleman with the 33rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft — Coleman was sidelined during the 2025 season due to poor time management and was advised by teammate Dion Dawkins to “act more mature.”
The owner’s remarks were made while he stood by the choice to elevate Brandon Beane from general manager to President of Football Operations on the same day McDermott was let go — a move that drew strong criticism from Bills supporters.
I’ll handle the Keon situation,” Pegula said, cutting off a question directed at Beane. “The coaching staff wanted to select Keon. I’m not claiming Brandon wouldn’t have chosen him, but he wasn’t his top priority.
That was Brandon acting as a team player and following the guidance from his coaching staff, who had strong opinions about the player. For some reason, he has faced criticism and remained silent on the matter. I am here to share the real story.
Coleman, 22, remains on the Bills’ team and is halfway through a four-year contract valued at approximately $10 million. Additionally, Pegula’s remarks are even more confusing since one of the coaching staff members he criticized, Joe Brady, is being considered for the position of new head coach. Brady served as offensive coordinator under McDermott.
Pegula added that the choice to dismiss McDermott was solely influenced by the 33-30 overtime loss against the Denver Broncos this past Saturday, not by his entire tenure as head coach.
I believe we can improve and I’m confident we will become better,” Pegula stated. “My choice to hire a new coach was influenced by the outcome of our game in Denver.
It was also revealed that quarterback Josh Allen, who left the Broncos game in tears after the defeat, might require surgery on his foot, but if he does, he should be ready for OTAs later this year.
Pegula mentioned that he hadn’t spoken to Allen about his choice to terminate McDermott prior to taking the action.
We are dedicated to bringing a Super Bowl to Buffalo,’ Pegula said. ‘I’m excited about conducting a successful coaching search. I understand this is an attractive position. Our phones are constantly ringing.
The Bills plan to meet with Brian Daboll, their ex-offensive coordinator, who was dismissed as head coach of the New York Giants in November, this weekend.
Other names being considered for interviews, in addition to Daboll and Brady, are Anthony Lynn, Anthony Weaver, Grant Udinski, and Lou Anarumo.
