The African Football Confederation (“CAF”) has criticized the inappropriate actions of certain players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Final held in Rabat on Sunday night.
CAF, in a statement released last night, expressed “strong disapproval of any improper conduct that took place during the games, particularly actions directed at the officials or event organizers.”
“CAF is examining all video material and will forward the case to the relevant authorities for suitable measures to be implemented against those determined to be at fault,” stated the release.
Pape Gueye’s goal in extra time secured Senegal’s second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory, following a tumultuous finish to regular time where the West African team left the field and Brahim Diaz failed to convert a penalty for Morocco in the 24th minute of stoppage time.
The extended pause followed the decision to award a penalty kick after the video assistant referee (VAR) intervened, leading to heated moments on the sidelines and in the stands, as Senegal supporters fought with security personnel while trying to enter the field.
After waiting so long to take his penalty, Diaz faced huge pressure, as he was given the opportunity to end his nation’s 50-year drought in winning the AFCON title with what essentially was the last kick of the match. However, his choice to gently lift the ball down the middle backfired badly, as Edouard Mendy managed to stay strong and easily gather it.
