The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released its decision after the events that occurred at the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match between Algeria and Nigeria. Having been eliminated following a 2–0 loss, the Fennecs witnessed the game end in a highly charged environment, with altercations and intense arguments erupting after the final whistle.
As per the results of the disciplinary inquiry initiated by CAF, multiple actions were found to breach competition rules. The match official had to be escorted away from the field by security staff, while Rafik Belghali accompanied the refereeing crew into the stadium’s corridors. Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane was also engaged in conflicts with Nigerian players following the game.
On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Algerian Football Association (FAF) revealed the penalties imposed by the regional authority. Rafik Belghali received a four-game suspension, with two games deferred, while Luca Zidane was given a two-match ban. Both suspensions will take effect during the initial qualification matches for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations. Furthermore, the FAF was fined $100,000.
While conveying these decisions, the Algerian Federation expressed its desire to contest the sanctions, which it views as excessive. The FAF mentioned it intends to start an appeal and is committed to safeguarding the interests of Algerian football while adhering to institutional and regulatory standards.
