ZIMBABWE Women faced a tough 1-run loss against Thailand Women yesterday during their second game in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier.

In a match that came down to the final ball, a last-over run-out decided the outcome for the Lady Chevrons, putting their World Cup ambitions in jeopardy.

Thailand scored an aggressive 115/7, led by a composed half-century from Nannapat Koncharoenkai (54 from 52 balls).

Zimbabwe’s bowlers maintained the pressure throughout most of the innings, yet Thailand’s strong performance in the late stages was crucial.

In response, Zimbabwe seemed to have the situation under control until a tense final over changed the direction of the game.

With two runs required off the last ball, bowler Phannita Maya displayed remarkable composure.

The ball was hit directly back to her, and she performed a precise run-out to conclude the innings at 114/8.

Maya received assistance from Thipatcha Putthawong, whose 2/27 restricted Zimbabwe’s middle order.

The second day of the Global Qualifier was marked by close results and strong performances from the group leaders.

Bangladesh kept their unbeaten streak alive with a 30-run win against Papua New Guinea, as Shorna Akter shone by scoring 37 runs off only 14 balls, helping her team reach 168/5.

The United States achieved their initial victory in the competition by overcoming a target of 144 against Namibia.

Although Yasmeen Khan from Namibia scored an impressive 74, Ella Claridge of the USA countered with a game-winning 70 to claim the points.

In the meantime, the Netherlands secured first place in Group B following a 7-run win against Scotland, with Sterre Kalis delivering a standout performance by scoring 87 runs from 60 balls.

Zimbabwe arrived at this Global Qualifier as a top contender from the African region, having secured their place in Nepal by excelling in regional tournaments.

In the past, the Lady Chevrons have frequently been close to qualifying for the World Cup, yet they have often faced difficulties in overcoming the last challenge.

This defeat against Thailand represents a major setback for their progress, particularly since Thailand and the Netherlands continue to be undefeated in their pursuit of the top positions.

The way ahead is now a “make-or-break” situation.

To advance to the semi-finals and maintain their hope of qualifying for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Zimbabwe needs to beat Scotland tomorrow.

A defeat would lead to an early departure from the competition, making the next game the most crucial match of their journey.
