Jorge Martinwas required to have two surgeries in the past few weeks to recover from injuries he sustained last year and is almost certainly not expected to participate in the first MotoGP pre-season test, according to Motorsport.com.
Martin has undergone two surgeries in the past few weeks: the first to fix the injury to the scaphoid bone in his left hand, which he injured in February of last year; the second to mend his right collarbone, broken on 27 September at the beginning of the sprint race during the Japanese Grand Prix.
Martin had already had surgery for both injuries last year, but his recovery was not consistent enough. Although the 2024 champion returned to riding after both injuries, claiming to be fully recovered, he still didn’t feel physically at 100%.
Consequently, the Aprilia rider decided to have additional medical examinations, which were crucial in determining the need to address both procedures.
In the last month, he has focused on physical rehabilitation along with gym training, yet he hasn’t taken a motorcycle ride since the Valencia test in November.
Serious doubt for Sepang
Until further information is received from Aprilia about the whole situation, a detail the manufacturer did not reveal during last week’s launch, Motorsport.com has learned that Martín is recovering well but will not participate in the first official pre-season test, scheduled to occur in Sepang from February 3rd to 5th.
This does not imply that Martin will be unable to go to Malaysia and join the team to monitor the progress of the RS-GP26 from the garage, as well as participate in the MotoGP season launch event in Kuala Lumpur on 6-7 February, an occasion he was unable to attend last year because of an injury.
Lorenzo Savadori, the test and development rider for the Noale-based manufacturer, will be responsible for replacing the Spaniard at Sepang, as he did last year, when he participated in as many as thirteen grand prix events.
Martin is now looking forward to making a full recovery and returning to the Aprilia for the second pre-season test taking place on 21-22 February in Buriram, where the season will kick off on 1 March with the Thai Grand Prix.
Last year, during his debut with Aprilia, Martín suffered an injury on the first day of the Sepang test and was unable to participate in the rest of the pre-season preparations. He had four surgical procedures throughout the season and managed to complete only four out of the 22 races held, as he continued to face various injuries all through the year.
