The Ugandan Basketball Federation (FUBA) announced on Tuesday that Bosnian coach Goran Lojo has been appointed as the new head coach of the national team. Lojo, who is 49 years old, succeeds American Georges Galanopoulos, who led the Silverbacks in three AfroBasket tournaments in 2017, 2019, and 2021. Lojo had previously coached the Ugandan women’s national team. One of his most notable achievements was guiding Bosnia and Herzegovina to fifth place in the 2021 Women’s EuroBasket. He also led the team during their participation in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia, where they finished last among the 12 competing nations. FUBA highlighted Lojo as an experienced international coach with a solid background in national teams, top-tier club basketball, and youth development across Europe. The federation stated that this appointment demonstrates its dedication to enhancing the competitiveness and global recognition of Ugandan basketball. Uganda will begin their qualification campaign for the 2027 World Cup in Cairo in February, facing Group D opponents Angola, host Egypt, and Mali. Four months ago, Uganda placed 15th in the AfroBasket tournament, which was seen as a drop from their sixth-place finish in 2021. In the Angolan capital, they lost all three of their matches against Egypt, Mali, and Senegal.
