The University of Calabar has been verified as the venue for the 28th Nigerian University Games Association Games, set to take place in August 2026.

NUGA shared this information through a Facebook update on Wednesday, mentioning that the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, officially took possession of the hosting flag and signed the Memorandum of Agreement, thereby giving UNICAL the authority to organize the Games.

The University of Calabar will officially organize the 28th NUGA Games.

“The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, officially accepted the hosting flag and signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), thereby giving the university the authority to organize the Games,” the statement said.

As per NUGA, the flag exchange and MoA ceremony occurred on the occasion of a formal visit by the NUGA Games Committee, headed by the Chairman of UNICAL NUGA Games 2026, Prof. Lukas Ogunjimi.

“The Vice Chancellor pledged the University’s complete dedication to providing what he termed ‘the best NUGA Games yet,’ while emphasizing Calabar’s image as a tranquil and hospitable host city,” the post stated.

The group also revealed that the Cross River State Government will act as the main host for the Games, with preparations already in progress before the event.

“Under the leadership of the Cross River State Government as the main organizer, arrangements are already in progress for the Games set to take place in August 2026, with UNICAL aiming to provide an unforgettable sports and cultural event for participants, officials, and visitors from throughout the nation,” the statement noted.

Remember that the 27th edition of the NUGA Games took place at the University of Jos and occurred in November 2025.

The event gathered student-athletes from universities throughout Nigeria to participate in different sports competitions, aligned with the theme of Unity, Play, and Peace, highlighting sportsmanship, youth development, and cultural blending.
