More than 200 swimmers will take part in the Kiambu County Aquatic Association Level One Swimming Championship at M-PESA Academy in Thika this weekend.
The championship unites more than 30 clubs and schools from the metropolitan counties of Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, Nairobi, as well as Murang’a and Laikipia, representing one of the biggest swimming events ever organized by a county aquatics association.
They feature Dashing Dolphins, Elite Aqua Warriors, Braeburn, the Harpoons, Sabis School, SuperMarlins, Aquawave, Merishaw, Dive Master, Snook, Beapro, Swimnation, and Wadi Degla.
Other institutions include Potterhouse School, Juja Elite, Genesis Sports, Orca, Aquashark Fin, Swimming Talents, Agakhan Academy, Crawford International School, Water Warriors, Premier, Wave Warrior, Hampton School Nanyuki, Gold Fish, Home Aquatics, St. Teresa School, Poseidon, Mombasa Aquatics, and Water Waives.
NesmasMbati, the Public Relations Officer of the Kiambu County Aquatics Association anticipates a fierce competition.
“Considering the intense competition anticipated, we expect county records to be surpassed and numerous athletes to meet Kenya Aquatics national qualifying times,” stated Mbati.
Chairman Gideon Kioko stated that the championship is a reflection of focused investment in grassroots development and performance pathways.
“This event highlights the progress swimming has made in Kiambu County. We are witnessing improved preparation, stronger clubs, and athletes who are eager to compete at the highest level. Organizing an Invitational Championship at the beginning of the year clearly demonstrates our aspirations,” he said.
Lauren Achieng, assistant coach at Orca, stated that they have been training each evening for the last two weeks and is confident the team will be the overall champions.
Some of the top athletes in their group include Barack Laja, who aims for a time of 16 seconds in the 50m freestyle event for boys aged seven and under.
