Accra, January 24, GNA/MAP – King Mohammed VI of Morocco has praised the citizens of his country for their joint efforts in the effective hosting of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which took place in the Kingdom from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

In a press release from the Royal Office, the King thanked national organizations, local governments, and residents for their contributions that facilitated the successful completion of the one-month event, which received acclaim throughout the continent and globally.

He particularly recognized the inhabitants of the host cities for their community spirit and efforts, which played a key role in what has been extensively referred to as one of the most successful events in the competition’s history.

The monarch also acknowledged the millions of Moroccans who stood behind the national team, the Atlas Lions, during the tournament. Their backing, he mentioned, accompanied the team’s impressive performance, which has strengthened Morocco’s position among the world’s top eight football teams.

He credited this advancement to continuous funding for sports growth and facilities, along with the dedication of young Moroccan athletes from the diaspora who decided to play for their homeland.

King Mohammed VI pointed out that, in addition to football, the achievement of AFCON 2025 highlights Morocco’s overall progress, which is guided by a long-term plan and an approach that focuses on the people as the core of national goals.

Speaking about the unrest that occurred at the end of the last game between Morocco and Senegal, the King expressed sorrow over the events but highlighted his conviction that the sense of African unity would triumph once feelings calm down.

He emphasized that Morocco’s achievement as the host country was also a victory for Africa, enhancing the continent’s international reputation.

The statement also rejected efforts to discredit the Kingdom’s accomplishments, as the Monarch expressed faith in the Moroccan people’s solidarity and strength. He emphasized that no outside aggression could diminish the historical connections among African countries or the collaborations Morocco keeps developing throughout the continent.

Emphasizing Morocco’s African identity and dedication, the King mentioned that the nation continues to be firm in advancing a unified and thriving Africa, through collaboration, common knowledge, and mutual respect.
