KIsped Queens/ HANDOUT
The Kisped Queens will seek to stabilize their first top-tier season as they welcome Ulinzi Starlets, who are competing for the title, this weekend at Kisumu Mamboleo Stadium.
The match features a team still adapting to the challenges of the Kenyan Women’s Premier League and another side dealing with player changes while maintaining their goals of winning the title.
Head coach Minjis of Kisped has called on his players to demonstrate more consistency and strength after a challenging January, during which a combination of high-profile games and boycotted matches disrupted the team’s flow.
“This marks our initial season at the top tier, and the first leg has provided a humbling educational experience,” Minjis stated.
We didn’t obtain the outcomes we had wished for. Lack of experience and exhaustion have been significant challenges, and constant travel and a rigorous schedule have taken a toll on the players both physically and mentally.
Although facing these difficulties, the team based in Kisumu has exhibited progress in recent matches, showcasing enhanced coordination and more effective choices.
Minji emphasized that the insights gained from facing experienced rivals will be vital as the season progresses.
In the meantime, Ulinzi Starlets head west with their championship hopes still alive, even though they are without a few important players.
Five members of their team have been selected for national service with the Rising Starlets, while others are out due to injuries or have left following enlistment in the military.
“I commend the girls; it says a lot about this team,” said head coach Collins Ochieng regarding his players’ selection to the national team.At this moment, my biggest challenge is Kisped. I treat each match as a final.
The Starlets are ranked second in the league standings with 26 points after winning 2–0 against Kibera Soccer Women on January 18 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
The reigning champions, Kenya Police Bullets, lead the table with 28 points, whereas the four-time winners, Vihiga Queens, are in third place with 25 points.
Trinity Starlets and Zetech Sparks are ranked fourth and fifth with 24 and 21 points each.
At other locations over the weekend, the Madira Soccer Assassins will play against Kisumu All Starlets at Nyang’ori Grounds in Majengo, while Bungoma Queens will take on Trinity Starlets at Bungoma National Polytechnic. Additionally, Kayole Starlets will host Gideon Starlets at the EABL Tusker grounds.
On Saturday, Zetech Sparks will welcome the reigning champions, Kenya Police Bullets, at the Zetech University venue, while Vihiga Queens will go to Marist University’s location in Karen to compete against Kibera Soccer Women.
