Struggling Mwatate United, part of the National Super League, have their coach Evans Mafuta downplaying concerns about being relegated, stating that the team is concentrating on moving up to the upper half of the standings.
“Concerns about relegation are not in our thoughts at the moment. Our goal is to win every game left and end up in a strong position. That is our aim for the season,” said Mafuta.
The strategist mentioned that optimism is strong within the Mwatate team after achieving consecutive 2-1 wins against Vihiga United and FC Talanta to kick off the year.
“We aim to maintain the momentum as we’ve secured victories in both games since the start of the year. Every second-leg match will be like a final,” said the CAF B-licensed coach.
Before their weekend match against the confident Soy United at Eldoret ASK Showground, Mafuta stated that his team will not be frightened despite their opponents having won three consecutive games.
“I am aware that Soy United are on a strong streak and they are playing at home, but as Mwatate, we are going there to secure the maximum points,” he said.
Mwatate are currently at the bottom of the standings with 13 points, secured through three victories and four draws, while suffering 10 defeats. Mafuta, who previously led APS Bomet to promotion, has initiated a significant restructuring of the team, releasing 15 players and intending to sign a similar number during this transfer period.
“I kept only 12 players from the squad that managed to win just one match last season. I took those 12 to Kisumu and defeated Vihiga United,” he said.
The club has already secured goalkeepers Moses Ouma and Derrick Siguna, along with Noah Wanjala, Calvin Maree, and Chris Baraza, and is anticipated to make 10 additional signings.
In the meantime, Mombasa United moved up to third place in the standings following the allocation of three points and two goals from their abandoned game against Gucha Stars.
The choice places Migori Youth at the top, followed by Michael Olunga Foundation Academy in second place as the competition for advancement becomes more intense.
