Kisumu RFC’s coach, Howard Okwemba, is confident in his team’s ability to perform well and secure their first victory in the Kenya Cup when they face Impala RFC today (Saturday) at Jomo Kenyatta Grounds, Mamboleo, Kisumu County.

The Bravehearts have lost their last five games this season, and coach Okwemba says they are worried, but there’s no cause for concern despite the difficult streak.

“Yes, we are concerned, but we are addressing the grey areas following our performance in the last game,” said Okwemba.

After their 41-28 defeat to Daystar University Falcons, Okwemba mentioned they have been re-evaluating their approach to beat Impala.

“We regroup and strategize about securing our first home victory. We are aware that Impala plays a very strong style of rugby. We will handle the game with care, as we have learned from our previous match,” said the coach.

Okwemba blamed the defeat against Daystar Falcons on Saturday last week on a lack of focus. It marked Daystar Falcon’s first loss in the Kenya Cup since they were promoted from the KRU Championship.

“We were approaching the final 15 minutes of the game. The players lost focus, and Daystar took advantage of their chances to defeat us,” he added.

The strategist mentioned that new players who joined the team during the mid-season transfer period have enhanced the team’s performance. “The team is improving. The new players have brought energy and competition to the squad,” Okwemba added.

Kisumu RFC is at the bottom of the standings with a single point and a goal difference of -198. Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST) will aim for their second victory of the season on Saturday when they take on Nondescripts at Ngong Race Course.

Last weekend, Masinde Murilo narrowly defeated Impala 20-15, securing their first victory of the 2025-26 season.

MMUST coach John Asila mentioned that the victory over Impala marked a pivotal moment for their team.

“We’ve been putting in a lot of effort without success. The victory over Impala was crucial,” the coach said.
