The Kenya Harlequins aim to improve from their previous game as they welcome the Menengai Oilers, who were runners-up last season, in the sixth matchday of the Kenya Cup.
Although Quins suffered a 24-12 loss against KCB, they made an impression by preventing the bankers from securing a bonus point. Head coach Patrice Agunda remains confident about maintaining this momentum as they face the disciplined Oilers, who are tied at the top of the table with champions Kabras, both having 25 points.
Quins are currently in seventh place with nine points after two victories and three defeats. Agunda thinks having an advantage in set-pieces and a strong defense will be crucial in competing against the offense-focused Oilers.
“It’s a significant match. We are aware that the Oilers are a strong team and have performed exceptionally well over the past few seasons. We are fairly competitive against KCB, and the players are prepared for the challenge,” stated Agunda.
The main focus will be to perform effectively in the scrum and lineout, and to carry out attacks efficiently. They have a strong forward pack, so we need to hinder their progress and maintain a solid defense.
Agunda will depend on Mohammed Khaider, Michael Onsando, Albert Alela, and captain Jeff Kiragu in the forward positions, while Patrick Wainaina, Faran Juma, Alvin Mutachi, and Franklin Mukaisi guide the backline.
The Oilers have selected a formidable team, featuring Desterious Ifedha, captain Ibrahim Ayoo, Vincent Mwikhali, and Amos Obae in the forward line, along with Samuel Mwaura, Beldad Ogeta, Samuel Ovwamu, and Abutwalib Wesonga in the backline.
Assistant coach Lawrence Buyachi stated: “Several areas have been focused on since our victory over Nakuru, particularly in the offensive strategy.
We must be more alert, but overall the boys are prepared and enthusiastic for the confrontation.
Last season, the Oilers defeated the Quins with a score of 42-26.Other matches include champions Kabras visiting Nakuru RFC, KCB welcoming neighbors Blak Blad, Strathmore Leos hosting Daystar Falcons, Impala playing against Kisumu, and Nondies facing Masinde Muliro University at the Racecourse Grounds.
