A prolonged cold period is affecting the northern parts of Thailand, where the temperature fell to just 1°C at the peak of Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai on Monday morning.
The extremely cold temperatures enabled the formation of hoarfrost for the 41st time this winter, surpassing a ten-year record.
The temperature at the mountaintop and Kew Mae Pan viewpoint reached 1°C for the second consecutive day. Grass-level temperatures varied from -0.1°C to 0.24°C, causing frost to cover the grass, the parking area at the Doi Inthanon summit ranger station, and the vicinity of the Kew Mae Pan viewpoint.
Over 2,000 visitors reached the summit of Thailand’s tallest mountain on Monday to enjoy the unusual chilly conditions and observe the foggy landscape illuminated by the initial light of dawn.
A continuous flow of tourists remained throughout the day at Kew Mae Pan viewpoint, located just a brief walk from the Doi Inthanon peak.
The fragile ice formations on the grass and vegetation form a breathtaking natural display when viewed from a certain angle.
