Here is a summary of events related to International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Tuesday, January 27, 2026:

What is the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust?

On January 27, the day the Soviet Red Army liberated the remaining prisoners from the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland during 1945, the United Nations selected this date in 2005 as a global observance to honor the victims of the Holocaust.

Since 1996, this day has served as a time for Germany to honor the millions of victims, including 6 million Jews, who were murdered by the Nazi regime led by dictator Adolf Hitler.

Auschwitz, the biggest Nazi detention facility where up to 1.5 million individuals—primarily Jews, but also numerous Poles, Sinti and Roma people, and political detainees from different countries—were killed between 1940 and 1945, has come to represent the Holocaust, known as the Shoah, or “disaster,” in Hebrew.

A museum honoring the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust was founded at the location of the former camp in 1947.
