An American streamer and YouTuber known as IShowSpeed is nearing the end of a 28-day journey across Africa, designed to highlight the region’s rich cultural variety, which is frequently overlooked due to portrayals of hardship and conflict.
I’ve accomplished so many amazing things in my life,” he mentioned during a visit to Botswana. “However, this journey is unique. It has broadened my perspective. Africa is not what I previously believed.
The 19-nation tour spanning southern, eastern, and North Africa started in Angola at the end of December. He participated in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco on January 18, later traveled to Senegal, where he joined fans in celebrating the national soccer team’s win, and then went to Nigeria, where he reached 50 million YouTube subscribers and celebrated his 21st birthday. On Monday, he visited Ghana, tried jollof rice, met a traditional leader, and received a massage at the shea butter museum.
“I’m back home, there’s nothing better than this,” said the content creator, whose actual name is Darren Watkins Jr., as he arrived in Ghana, disclosing that his heritage comes from the West African nation. He is set to arrive in Namibia on Tuesday, possibly marking the end of the tour.
For his “Speed Does Africa” series, Watkins broadcasted live on YouTube. In videos that could extend for up to nine hours, he tried regional foods, picked up traditional dances, and competed with athletes, frequently expressing enthusiasm. A significant number of his fans gathered around him at various locations.
Changing perceptions of Africa
Since the tour started, many African American internet users have shown their support through videos that have gone viral.
Pape Seye, a 40-year-old inhabitant of Dakar, Senegal, emphasized Watkins’ visit to the House of Slaves on Gorée Island, an emblem of the Atlantic slave trade that transported millions of Africans into slavery. “Americans, particularly Black Americans, should understand that our histories are interconnected, that many of our ancestors could have been taken from Gorée,” he stated.
Some critics have shown greater doubt. Beninese influencer Nelly Mbaa, who is recognized online as Afro Chronik, claimed that Watkins represents a Western standard that values young Black men for their showiness instead of their intelligence. She mentioned that his followers are drawn not by clever humor but by him portraying “an absurd, exaggerated, and grotesque persona.”
“If he were to drop this character, the continuous frowning, yelling, and provocative statements — his fans would probably vanish,” Mbaa stated.
IShowSpeed boasts over 50 million YouTube subscribers, 45 million Instagram followers, and 47 million TikTok fans. His brand has been established through loud, over-the-top, and occasionally aggressive reactions, which have become his online identity but also led to some controversy.
In 2022, he faced a ban from competitive online gaming events following a sexist comment directed at a female player and was temporarily suspended from YouTube for featuring explicit content in a video game.
