At least ten individuals have suffered injuries following an attack by piranhas while they were swimming in a river that is frequently visited by tourists.
Stunning images revealed victims with blood-soaked bandages covering injuries to their feet following the event on Sunday in the Paraguacu River, located in the Iacu municipality.Brazilthe northeastern state of Bahia.
After the attacks, local municipal officials stated that the section of water where they took place would be off-limits to swimmers, and signs would be posted alerting people to the risks posed by piranhas.
They also mentioned that a technical assessment will be conducted, as piranha attacks in the region have been reported as unprecedented.
A booth that sells cold beverages and snacks, located by the riverbank, stated in a release: ‘When the initial incidents of assaults on swimmers began taking place, we provided assistance and guided them to the closest medical facility.’
We also notified every customer who was under the parasols we had rented or in the water about the risks of staying in the river.
We finished early because of what occurred.
We are pleased to assist wherever possible and will temporarily stop the sunshade service we were offering until there is more information about the cause of these attacks.



An environmental expert shared with a local television station that piranhas are frequently found in the Paraguacu River, although incidents involving humans are uncommon and might be associated with elevated temperatures causing them stress.
Many of the people injured in Sunday’s event suffered injuries to their feet and lower legs.
As many as 2,000 individuals visit the location of the attacks each day on weekends and holidays, according to local sources.
A baby who was seven months old was among several individuals hurt in October of last year following an attack by piranhas at a resort located on the Amazon River in Brazil.
It is reported that the infant lost part of one of her toes during the incidents at Miriti Beach in Manacapuru.
In December, a young child passed away due to a piranha attack after straying from her home near a river in Brazil and falling into the water.
A two-year-old girl named Clara Victoria was consumed by a meat-eating fish not long after she fell into a river in the Amazonas region.
Her parents located her and pulled her from the water, but she had already passed away.



News reports from that time indicated she had strayed from her parents and slipped through an unguarded opening in a section designated for the future installation of a bathroom.
The Paraguacu River flows for 310 miles starting from the Chapada Diamantina highlands in central Bahia and ends at the Baia de Todos os Santos. It is the longest river completely located within the state of Bahia.
