- New South Wales could receive an additional day off for Anzac Day
- Premier Chris Minns addressing RSL for endorsement
New South Walesmight soon introduce a new public holiday, as Premier Chris Minns indicated the state could adopt itWestern Australiaand the ACT providing a Monday holiday whenAnzac Day falls on a weekend.
On Thursday, Minns told Triple M Breakfast that the government is considering the adjustment, which would align NSW with other states that permit employees to have the Monday off if April 25 falls on a Saturday or Sunday.
“we’ve never had it if it’s fallen on a weekend,” minns stated.
But Western Australia and the ACT have recently made adjustments so that if it falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the following Monday is taken as a day off.
The Prime Minister stated he is not yet making a commitment, but acknowledged the concept is under consideration.
He mentioned that he will discuss with RSL NSW representatives prior to making any determination.
I’m not making a commitment today, as I believe this decision needs to be made with the RSL specifically. We have many veterans. Anzac Day… it’s truly our national day.
Minns emphasized the need to preserve the importance of Anzac Day, arguing that any public holiday on a Monday should not take precedence over the remembrance day.

“I need to believe that… a public holiday on the Monday doesn’t reduce the importance of the 25th,” he said.
I would hate for that to occur, and everyone somewhat says, ‘honor it on Monday.’ We can’t do that.
Minns stated that New South Wales is behind other states in terms of the number of public holidays.
“We are not adequately provided with public holidays, as there are many more in every other state,” he said.
So I can tell you all, we’ll be having a discussion about it this year.
Anzac Day will be observed on a weekend in 2026 (Saturday) and 2027 (Sunday), resulting in NSW employees missing a day off during the week for two consecutive years.
Should the plan proceed, millions of NSW employees might soon have an extended weekend in April, without using their annual leave.
