President Donald Trump’s large-scale immigration enforcement initiative faced a major obstacle on Wednesday, when a federal judge in Minnesota issued a ruling to stop the arrest and detention of legal refugees who have not been charged with any offenses.
Senior U.S. District Court Judge John Tunheimorderedthat the efforts to detain 5,600 refugees from Minnesota, move them to different states, and question them while in custody should stop — and that anyone who was sent to other states in this way should be brought back to Minnesota.

It is crucial to highlight that the refugees affected by this Order are carefully and meticulously screened individuals who have been invited into the United States due to persecution in their home countries,” wrote Tunheim, a nominee of former President Bill Clinton. “They are not committing crimes on our streets, nor did they enter the country illegally. Refugees have a legal right to be in the United States, including the right to work and to live peacefully — and importantly, the right not to face the terror of being arrested and detained without warrants or justification in their homes or while going to religious services or to purchase groceries.
At its finest, America acts as a refuge for personal freedoms in a world frequently marked by oppression and harshness,” he added. “We forsake this principle when we impose fear and disorder upon our fellow citizens.

Senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, praised the action as a significant setback for Trump’s attempts to intimidate immigrants.
“HUGE news!” he wroteon X. “This involves an initiative by the Trump administration to detain thousands of refugees who have already been screened and vetted in Minnesota, transporting them to Texas for incarceration and subsequent questioning. Once the questioning concludes, individuals are left on the streets with no assistance in returning.”
This occurs as the Trump administration deals with several other legal issues regarding their enforcement actions in Minnesota, including a federal judge who hasthreatenedExpressing contempt of court towards acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement director Todd Lyons.
