Legal specialists were surprised when a federal judge delivered an “unusual” caution to the PresidentDonald Trump’simmigration authorities issued a new court order on Wednesday.

A federal judge from the District of Minnesota, Patrick J. Shiltz, issued a ruling that canceled a scheduled contempt hearing for the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Todd Lyonsdue to his agency’s apparent failure to comply with court rulings. In the order, Shlitz highlighted 96 cases where ICE had breached a court directive.court order.

ICE has probably broken more court orders in January 2026 than certain federal agencies have in their entire history,” Schiltz stated. “The Court cautions ICE that continued failure to follow court orders could lead to future show-cause orders demanding the personal attendance of Lyons or other government officials. ICE is not above the law.

The directive was issued during a period when Trump’s immigration policies are under greater examination, following the deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis, both of whom were killed by immigration officers. Politicians have demanded that Department of Homeland Security Secretary and White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller either be dismissed or step down.

Legal professionals responded to Schiltz’s directive via social media platforms.

Connor Lamb, a legal professional with Kline & Specter, wrote onBlueskythat the order was “astonishing.”
