Why Mormon Women Stopped Utah’s Republican Surge

The Guardian reportsIt was primarily the result of a highly conservative group of Mormon women who disrupted Republican attempts to create a new Republican district through gerrymandering in Utah this year.

The Pew Research Center indicates that Mormons, referred to as followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,were some of Trump’s most vocal advocatesin 2016, approximately 61 percent of church members supported him, leading to the grouphis second-largest religious support base.

However, in 2018, the Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) assisted in collecting sufficient signatures to approve Utah’s Proposition 4, with50.34% of the votes. This established an autonomous state commission to create state and congressional boundaries based on impartial standards, instead of allowing lawmakers to select their own constituents.

However, in 2020, state Republican officials instructed MWEG to step aside and abolished Proposition 4. They then created new maps that divided Salt Lake County – Utah’s youngest, most diverse, and most liberal area – into four different districts. This concentrated urban Democratic votes into Republican-leaning rural areas, solidifying GOP control for the upcoming election. The MWEG group filed a lawsuit against their state government.arguingthat the legislature, controlled by Republicans, breached the state constitution by modifying a valid ballot initiative approved by voters.

Last summer, the women’s groups emerged victorious,” states the Guardian. “Now, state legislators are required to create new maps that might lead to a Democratic congressional seat in the 2026 midterm elections.

I reside in an area that is expected to turn Democratic,” said Emma Petty Addams, founder of MWEG. “I will lose a Republican representative I admire, and I am completely fine with that if it ensures my neighbors receive proper representation.

Challenging legislators was not simple, stated Addams, a mother of three and a piano instructor. However, the legal fight was essential to address “an abuse of authority” that Utah citizens chose to safeguard with “safeguards.”

People desire to view Mormon women as either the secret wives or as a traditional wife,” Addams stated. “We are not any of those.

The organization is already preparing for its next battle, however, as the Utah Republican Party seeks to overturn Proposition 4. In an attempt to manipulate Utah’s electoral boundaries tosafeguard Trump’s slim Republican majority in the House, the party is aiming for 141,000 signatures by February to put the repeal on the November ballot.
