Amid the constant changes in technical directors, team principals, and CEOs at Aston Martin over recent seasons, the attention on its operations during the Barcelona shakedown would have been significant even without the added interest in its new car being the first output of its updated structure under Adrian Newey.

The team was the final one to arrive among those who actually participated in the five-day track event, showing up on Wednesday evening after indicating it would miss at least one of its allowed three running days. When the AMR26 finally came out of the garage on Thursday afternoon, it immediately stopped working withLance Strollbehind the wheel – the Canadian had finished just five laps.

But on the last dayFernando Alonsocompleted 61 laps based on unofficial timing, although the exact number of consecutive laps he finished during any single stint remains unclear.

It was great,” remarked Alonso. “Really looking forward to being back in the car after the winter, and for us, it’s the first day.

I am aware that some teams conducted filming days as practice sessions at the start of January and then had a full week in Barcelona—but for us, it was truly our first day, so I believe we had a positive experience.

Over 60 laps and the car is performing well, so this is just the beginning of the day.

Although the AMR26 showcases several interesting features visible from the current images, Aston Martin has had to navigate building a new partnership with the incoming power unit provider, Honda.

That initiative by itself represents a completely new endeavor, as the engineers in charge of the power unit that droveMax Verstappento the world championship in 2021 and 2022, before Honda moved the IP to Red Bull’s internal setup, have already been reassigned to other parts of the Honda group.

Aston Martin has also needed to construct its own transmission after years of relying on the fullMercedespowertrain – a challenging learning process, although it opened up new possibilities, as the designers were no longer restricted by the suspension attachment points on the Mercedes transmission.

Being late for testing is very much in line with Newey’s approach, as the renowned engineer is famous for advancing the development process right up to the final moment, striving to begin on track with the car in as advanced a condition as possible – even if this means sacrificing some time on the track. The individual himself has also been seen walking around the garage, closely examining everything.

“I believe everyone is highly driven when they observe him in the garage focusing on every detail,” stated Alonso.

I can see all the mechanics, the expressions, everyone is watching him – trying to find out something that he might have mentioned about the car or what he wants to enhance. He’s constantly teaching us something.
