President of the African Football Confederation, Patrice Motsepe, emphasized the organization’s “strong dedication” to protecting the integrity, image, and worldwide competitiveness of African football after events that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations final matches.

In a statement released on Friday through the CAF website, Motsepe mentioned that he and the confederation’s executive committee, together with the leaders of CAF’s 54 member associations, are fully committed to safeguarding and advancing African football and CAF tournaments.

“I am extremely disappointed by the unacceptable events that took place during the Africa Cup of Nations final,” Motsepe stated, mentioning the Morocco 2025 competition. He noted that he has taken into account a decision made by CAF’s disciplinary committee on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, and emphasized that he respects and will follow all judgments issued by CAF’s judicial authorities.

Motsepe mentioned that he has requested an emergency session of CAF’s executive committee, the organization’s top governing body apart from its annual general assembly, to examine CAF rules, including the code of conduct.

His goal, he stated, is to guarantee that CAF’s judicial institutions possess the power to enforce suitable and deterrent penalties for significant breaches of CAF’s statutes, rules, and disciplinary guidelines, as well as actions that damage the reputation, integrity, and worldwide status of African football.

He also emphasized the advancements achieved in recent years regarding the quality, independence, and professionalism of African referees, video assistant referee operators, and match commissioners. Motsepe stated that CAF is dedicated to providing more financial support and specialized technical knowledge to ensure that African officials adhere to the top global standards of impartiality, skill, and ethical conduct.

Among the initial changes he implemented upon taking over as CAF president, Motsepe mentioned, was guaranteeing the autonomy and fairness of the confederation’s referees committee. He pointed out that the committee consists of individuals recommended by CAF’s 54 member associations, alongside Africa’s most skilled and esteemed referees.

“it is of utmost importance that african referees, var operators, and match commissioners are visible, respected, and acknowledged as impartial, just, and top-tier,” motsepe stated.

He ended by stating that, with the extra reforms and comprehensive actions being implemented, African football and CAF tournaments will maintain worldwide recognition and appreciation, placing them among the top in the globe.
