Pape Thiaw, Achraf Hakimi, and Ismaël Saibari
The African Football Confederation (CAF) has imposed strict disciplinary actions after events that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and the host country Morocco.
The coach of Senegal, Pape Bouna Thiaw, has received a five-match ban from official CAF games and a $100,000 penalty following a ruling of improper behavior.
The CAF Disciplinary Committee determined that Thiaw violated standards of fair play and ethics by directing his players to leave the field during the intense final, a move that CAF claimed damaged the game’s reputation.
The coach’s penalty was included in a larger set of disciplinary actions taken following misconduct during the game. Two Senegalese players, Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, received two-match suspensions from CAF for inappropriate conduct towards referees.
The CAF also applied significant financial fines to the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), charging the organization a total of $615,000.
This involved a $300,000 penalty for the inappropriate actions of Senegalese fans, a further $300,000 for the unprofessional conduct of the team’s players and coaching staff, and an extra $15,000 following five Senegal players receiving yellow cards in the final.
Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi was given a two-game CAF suspension, with one game deferred for a one-year probationary period. Midfielder Ismaël Saibari received a three-match ban and a $100,000 fine for unsporting behavior.
The Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF) received a $200,000 penalty due to the misconduct of the ball boys during the game, and an extra $100,000 fine was applied after players and coaching staff entered the VAR review zone and disrupted the referee’s duties. A further $15,000 fine was given for fans using lasers inside the stadium.
In the meantime, the CAF rejected a formal complaint submitted by the Moroccan Football Federation, claiming that Senegal violated regulations.
The Disciplinary Committee dismissed the complaint entirely, concluding all disciplinary and regulatory actions related to what CAF referred to as one of the most contentious AFCON finals in recent years.
