Beijing, January 29, (dpa/GNA) – Former national team coach Li Tie and former federation president Chen Xuyuan are among 73 individuals who have received lifetime bans from the Chinese Football Association (CFA).

On Friday, the CFA stated that 13 clubs will have up to 10 points deducted for the next season and face penalties as part of an effort to combat match-fixing, betting, and unlawful practices in football.

It did not specify the offenses, referring only to “illegal transactions.”

A former Everton player named Li, who earned 91 international appearances and served as China’s coach from 2019 to 2021, along with Chen, who led the Chinese Football Association from 2019 to 2023, received sentences of 20 years and a life term respectively in corruption trials held in 2024.

The most severely affected teams are Shanghai Shenhua, the runners-up from last season, and Tianjin Jinmen Tiger, both of whom have been penalized with a 10-point deduction and a fine of 1 million yuan ($144,000) each.

Defending champions Shanghai Port and capital team Beijing Guoan have each been penalized with five points deducted and fined 400,000 yuan.

China has made efforts to establish itself as a significant force in football over the years, but it has faced multiple instances of corruption and match manipulation.
