A traditional powerhouse of Zimbabwean football, Caps United are now finding themselves in a changed environment.

Following several seasons of hovering around the middle of the table and facing financial challenges, Caps United have officially announced a revival of their reputation as the “Cup Kings.”

Central to this revival is Takesure Chiragwi, the individual entrusted with guiding the Green Machine back to the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

Chiragwi, who notably guided Ngezi Platinum Stars to a memorable league championship in 2023, joins Makepekepe with a track record of achievement and a defined plan.

With his first season approaching, the club is filled with excitement, fueled by a significant US$4.3 million sponsorship agreement with Lesotho’s Green Dollar Development Bank.

In contrast to the hectic, last-minute hiring efforts of earlier years, Caps United’s 2026 campaign is based on a structure of careful preparation. Chiragwi has put together a “fit” team that combines well-known players from his successful tenure at Ngezi with the club’s long-standing stars.

“Indeed, we are quite pleased,” Chiragwi mentioned in a recent conversation.

I believe it’s a highly competitive team that consistently strives each day.

We are pleased with their performance and the way they are treating one another.

The arrival of skilled individuals is impressive.

New players such as Wallace Magalene, Davison Marowa, Obriel Chirinda, and Richard Hachiro are teaming up with returning veterans including Tanaka Shandirwa, Kundai Benyu, Phinias Bamusi, and Bruce Kangwa.

For Chiragwi, the emphasis is not solely on skill, but on the connection between the new and the traditional.

To strengthen this revamped squad, the Green Machine will travel to Malawi for a prominent pre-season training camp starting February 12.

Chiragwi considers this journey as the fundamental spiritual element of their preparation.

“With regard to mixing and connecting, I believe this is the appropriate moment,” Chiragwi mentioned, thanking club president Farai Jere for the support.

It’s crucial to invest more time as a group… getting to know one another, the characters, and all aspects.

I believe that’s the most crucial camp we will attend.

At present, the technical team—comprising former Caps United players Ian Bakala and Joseph Kamwendo—is placing significant emphasis on physical training.

Chiragwi mentioned that the players’ reaction has been “very positive,” with no injuries reported as they move from the off-season to match readiness.

For Chiragwi, this is more than a regular job; it’s a return to his roots.

Wearing the green shirt as an athlete, he is aware of the pressure that accompanies the emblem.

He expresses deep respect for his teacher, Lloyd Chitembwe, and the heritage passed down by those who preceded him.

“I’m extremely excited, but on a different platform as a coach,” he said.

I, coach Ian, and coach Jose (Kamwendo) were all previous players at this place.

We have achieved success as players, and now we have the chance to bring some trophies to the club as coaches.

With a renovated Gwanzura Stadium coming up and a team full of talent, the 2026 season seems less like a period of reconstruction and more like the start of a coronation.

The Green Machine will officially reveal their kit and final team on February 27, but the message is already evident: the giant has awakened and is eager for victory.
