A Black Stars squad
The president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has expressed significant disappointment over the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), yet he commended the team’s strong recovery.
For the first time in over two decades, Ghana was absent from the continent’s top football competition following their last-place finish in the qualifying group, thereby missing the Morocco 2025 event.
In an interview with Metro TV, Mr. Okraku recognized the importance of the defeat, emphasizing that participation in AFCON is essential for a country like Ghana, which has a strong football tradition.
“AFCON is a certainty for me. We must be present. If we aren’t, that’s the downside of our sport,” he said.
Although there was some disappointment, the GFA President was inspired by the Black Stars’ performance, noting their achievement in qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly organized by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Mr. Okraku stated that the national team remained unbeaten throughout the entire 2025 calendar year in competitive matches, a achievement he feels demonstrates renewed confidence and development within the team.
“In 2025, the Black Stars didn’t suffer a single competitive defeat. That brings me joy,” he mentioned.
Ghana is set to compete in Group L during the 2026 World Cup, facing Panama, England, and Croatia as they aim to leave a significant mark on the international scene.
