Serena Williams

Tennis icon Serena Williams has not completely dismissed the possibility of returning to professional tennis, even though she had earlier stated she had no intentions of making a comeback to the sport.

A 23-time Grand Slam singles winner, Williams left competitive tennis after the 2022 US Open.

Nevertheless, rumors of a possible return emerged in December following the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) informing BBC Sport that the 44-year-old had been added back to the drug testing list.

At that moment, the American rejected proposals for a comeback, saying she was “not returning.” However, during an appearance on the Today Show on Wednesday, Williams took a more flexible approach.

“I’m not sure, I’ll just see what happens,” she said when questioned about a potential return.

Pressed by host Savannah Guthrie, who called her answer “a maybe,” the seven-time Wimbledon champion responded: “It’s not a maybe,” without providing additional explanation.

Williams, a mother to two children, also shared that she recently indicated her profession as a stay-at-home mom and homemaker on an official document. When asked about her alleged return to the drug testing program, she chose not to provide specifics.

I’m not sure if I was out. Listen, I can’t talk about this,” she said. “If I want to put these rumors to rest… listen, I just want to go to bed.

According to anti-doping rules, athletes need to be part of the testing program for a minimum of six months before they can qualify to resume competing. Williams’ name was included in an ITIA document from October 6, which outlines athletes who are required to undergo testing.

Although there has been no official announcement, Williams’ remarks are expected to spark continued discussion on whether one of the sport’s top athletes might yet come back to play.
