Initially, it appeared to be a joke or optimistic speculation, but the idea of a 2026 IndyCar street race in Washington D.C. has now become a tangible reality.

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, shared an AI-created video recently, showing IndyCar racing on the National Mall, which was then posted by President Donald Trump, who voiced his approval of the concept, aiming to include it in events marking the USA’s 250th anniversary of independence.

On Friday, Trump issued an executive order outlining plans for a race, which he named the ‘Freedom 250 Grand Prix’. He is directing the city’s mayor, Muriel Bowser, to collaborate with his administration in organizing the event. The Interior and Transportation departments will be responsible for developing the track design in conjunction with IndyCar, as well as securing the necessary funding for the race.

The schedule intends to conduct the race during the weekend of August 21-23, between the events in Markham, Ontario and the Milwaukee Mile in Wisconsin. Organizing this event will present a complex logistical task with a short timeframe, along with the complication of advertisements being prohibited on Capitol property.

“President Trump has granted our sport an extraordinary honor, and we are thankful for his trust and backing as IndyCar gets ready to celebrate our nation with a remarkable motorsport event,” said Roger Penske, owner of IndyCar, in a statement initially covered by NBC News.

This will be an unforgettable occasion that honors our nation’s independence and the heritage of patriotism, creativity, and outstanding performance that drives motorsports throughout America.

In 2019, Trump presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Penske, and he was present with Trump in the Oval Office during the signing of this executive order on Friday. Trump is confident that the event could “break attendance records.”

“For our company, supporting the country’s 250th anniversary is significant, and there’s no better way for us to introduce automotive and speed into the D.C. region, as well as the chance to compete here with our IndyCars,” Penske added.

We possess the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and we are utilizing its legacy spanning more than a century, along with the speed and events that have occurred there involving various manufacturers, and bringing it to this race.

It will be incredible. We are thrilled for people to experience it. The majority of the area will be accessible at no cost. It is expected to bring economic advantages to the region and the city.
