The Nigeria Football Association (NFF) has expressed its continued belief in the appeal submitted against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) concerning the reported use of unqualified players in the Africa World Cup playoff final held last November.
On Friday, the NFF’s General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, reassured Nigerians that the federation has a solid and reliable case with football’s regulatory bodies.
Sanusi emphasized that the NFF would not have taken the appeal if it didn’t have valid grounds, pointing out that all necessary papers and proof were properly provided.
He revealed that FIFA has not turned down Nigeria’s request, and the federation is now waiting for a final ruling, which is anticipated in February.
He believes the Super Eagles still have a practical opportunity to qualify for the World Cup, depending on the result of the appeal.
Sanusi, in an interview with Brila FM, emphasized that the NFF continues to anticipate a positive outcome, encouraging Nigerians to stay patient while the proceedings unfold.
The case focuses on accusations that the Democratic Republic of Congo used players who did not meet eligibility criteria in the crucial playoff match, a statement the NFF claims breached the competition’s rules.
Nigeria did not manage to qualify for the World Cup after losing the playoff match but is pursuing a remedy via the appeals procedure.
