The top-ranked men’s tennis player, Carlos Alcaraz from Spain, and the tennis icon Novak Djokovic, currently ranked fourth in the world from Serbia, are set to face each other in the men’s singles final of the 2026 Australian Open on February 1st. No matter who comes out victorious, a significant milestone will be achieved in the annals of global tennis.

In the semifinals, both competitors engaged in intense battles. Alcaraz overcame world No. 3 Alexander Zverev from Germany with a score of 3-2 (6-4 7-6<7-5> 6-7<3-7> 6-7<4-7> 7-5) following a demanding match that lasted 5 hours and 27 minutes, which took place in Melbourne, Australia on the 30th, securing his spot in the final.

Djokovic advanced to the final by overcoming world No. 2 Jannik Sinner (Italy) with a tense five-set match, scoring a 3-2 victory (3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4).

Alcaraz has already claimed the French Open in 2024 and 2025, Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024, and the US Open in 2022 and 2025. Should he win this competition, he would be the youngest player ever to complete a career Grand Slam at 22 years and 8 months. Alcaraz, who was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2024 and last year, is more determined than ever to secure victory this time.

For Djokovic, this title holds significant importance. If he secures the Australian Open, he will set a new record with 25 grand slam titles, making him the all-time leader. Djokovic currently has 24 grand slam titles, matching the record of the retired Margaret Court. Moreover, a win here would further solidify his record for the most Australian Open men’s singles titles, reaching 11.

The championship is anticipated to be a test of stamina and physical control in extreme heat surpassing 40 degrees Celsius. Djokovic also received favorable circumstances in the quarterfinals and semifinals, as his rivals withdrew one after another.

The men’s singles final of the Australian Open is set to start at 5:30 p.m. Korean time on February 1st and will be aired live on tvN Sports.
