It is also anticipated to generate approximately 3,500 employment opportunities.
Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd (APL) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) to set up an e-methanol facility capable of producing 150 tonnes per day at Kandla Port in Gujarat.
The initiative will demand an investment exceeding ₹1,200 crore and generate approximately 3,500 employment opportunities.
DPA will offer port infrastructure, while APL will construct the green methanol plant, generating e-methanol through the use of green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide. This fuel serves as an eco-friendly option for maritime transport, heavy industry, and chemical production.
The plant will assist Kandla Port in establishing itself as a key center for green fuel along global shipping routes, lower transportation expenses, and promote sustainable bunkering facilities.
The effort is in line with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the government’s wider clean energy, Make inIndia, and the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
APL, which manages one of India’s biggest methanol plants in Namrup, is set to transition from traditional methanol production to green and e-methanol, enhancing India’s standing in the international green marine fuel industry.
“This initiative represents a significant milestone in India’s Maritime Decarbonisation strategy, enabling us to move forward in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2070,” stated Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
