A girl and two boys are said to have left their teacher’s supervision, rented an individual room at a different place, consumed alcohol, and remained there until the next day.

Hong Kong’s education officials have voiced worries after reports surfaced that three students—a pair of boys and a girl from a secondary school—supposedly left their hotel to consume alcohol and book an additional room for the night during an exchange trip to mainland China.

The Department of Education stated on Wednesday that they reached out to the school right after becoming aware of the incident.

It mentioned that the school was addressing the issue via its internal disciplinary and counseling processes and would provide a report to the government.

“The bureau has reminded schools to ensure students strictly adhere to discipline during educational activities, follow applicable rules and guidelines, including not departing from the group or hotel without authorization, and abide by the law,” a spokesperson stated.

It committed to staying in close communication with the school to offer required assistance and direction throughout the investigation.

The event is said to have taken place in mid-January while participating in a cultural exchange program on the mainland, arranged by the Hong Kong Sze Yap Commercial and Industrial Association Wong Tai Shan Memorial College in Sham Shui Po for its Form Five students.

The girl and two boys are said to have left their teacher’s watch during the late hours, booked a different room elsewhere to consume alcohol, and remained there until the next day.

The violation of rules became known after other students, who had knowledge of the incident, reportedly informed the school.

The South China Morning Post has contacted the school for a response.

The office emphasized that it had informed schools to encourage students to maintain strong discipline throughout their studies.

“Students are required to strictly adhere to all rules and regulations, including the restriction of not leaving the group or their hotel without permission,” the spokesperson stated.

The agency encouraged students to understand the harmful effects of improper behavior on both themselves and those around them.

The spokesperson added, ‘Any action that ignores personal safety or intentionally interferes with group discipline is extremely irresponsible, harming not just the school’s image but also violating the trust and principles taught by families and society.’
