Joel Dahmen (39, American) gained unexpected fame from Netflix’s golf documentary *Full Swing* and has recently captured attention again by obtaining a PGA Tour spot in an unusual way.
As reported by U.S. CBS and other international media on the 4th, Dahmen sent a letter written on a “green polo shirt” to the organizers, expressing his desire to participate in the PGA Tour’s WM Phoenix Open, which is scheduled to be held in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the 6th (Korean time). At that time, Dahmen was ranked 171st in the world and did not meet the qualification criteria for the event. In his letter, he stated, “I have always tried to embrace the ‘individuality’ that makes the Phoenix Open unique. I believe my actions have positively helped strengthen this individuality. If given the opportunity to enter, I promise to always wear the shirt.”
In contrast to standard golf events, the Phoenix Open allows for drinking and boisterous cheering. Particularly, the 16th hole (par 3), known as the “Coliseum Hole” due to its ability to accommodate more than 20,000 fans, offers an energy level similar to that of an EPL game. During the 2022 tournament, Dahmen tossed his shirt into the audience after finishing the 16th hole in the final round, earning enthusiastic cheers. Although he was given a serious warning by the PGA Tour, this moment helped solidify his popularity among fans. His recent letter humorously alluded to this event, promising to keep his shirt on this time. Dahmen has now qualified and is scheduled to participate.
Dahmen also became well-known in 2023 for his role in Netflix’s popular golf documentary *Full Swing*. His motivating story—dealing with his mother’s passing and fighting testicular cancer while making a comeback to the PGA Tour—won the affection of golf enthusiasts. At the Farmers Insurance Open, the first event of the season, he achieved four eagles in the first two rounds, finishing tied for 7th place and keeping up his positive momentum.
The WM Phoenix Open, offering a total prize money of $9.6 million, is scheduled to take place from the 6th to the 9th (Korean time) at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona. Competitors include world number one Scotty Scheffler (U.S.), Brooks Koepka (U.S.), who has made a return from LIV Golf, and Kim Si-woo, who has regularly finished in the top 10 in all events this season.
