The police plan to question Jeon Han-gil, 55, a former Korean history teacher, who is accused of disseminating misleading information regarding President Lee Jae Myung, on the 12th.
A source with knowledge of the situation stated that the Criminal Mobile Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency filed defamation charges under the Information and Communications Network Act and informed Jeon to come for questioning on the morning of the 12th.
Previously, the National Communication Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea lodged a police report against Jeon in October of last year, accusing him of disseminating false information and making threatening statements about President Lee and Kim Hyun-ji, who is the head of the Cheong Wa Dae office for the president’s private secretary. It is reported that a total of eight complaints have been submitted against Jeon.
Jeon arrived back in South Korea from the United States through Terminal 2 at Incheon International Airport on the 3rd. He had left in August of the previous year, mentioning that he would share information with the global community regarding human rights restrictions during the tenure of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
Concerning the police inquiry, Jeon stated, “I have lived without violating the law for 55 years, but since the Lee Jae Myung government took office, I have been subjected to eight complaints. This represents an overuse of complaints and legal actions to suppress free speech.”
