The South Korean national team is expected to secure three gold medals and rank 14th in the total medal count at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, which will begin on the 6th, as per a prediction from an international analytics company.

As per information shared with Yonhap News by the Canadian sports analytics company ‘Shoreview Sports Analytics’ on the 4th, South Korea is anticipated to win three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, positioning it 14th in the medal count. During the previous 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, South Korea also came in 14th, earning two gold, five silver, and two bronze medals. The nation’s top performance at the Winter Olympics occurred at the 2010 Vancouver Games, where it claimed six gold medals and placed fifth.

The report pointed out that South Korea’s prospects for gold medals include high school snowboarder Choi Ga-on (18, Sehwa Girls’ High School), ‘Lamborghini’ Kim Gil-li (22, Seongnam City Government), and the women’s short track speed skating 3,000m relay team. Choi Min-jeong (28, Seongnam City Government) has the opportunity to make history by becoming the first female short tracker to win three straight Olympic golds if she wins the women’s 1,500m. However, the analysis forecasted that Kim Gil-li would claim gold in that race, with Choi Min-jeong earning silver. If Choi Ga-on beats top star Chloe Kim (USA) in the women’s snowboard halfpipe, she would earn South Korea its first-ever Winter Olympic gold in snowboarding.

Other forecasts suggest a silver medal in the men’s short track 5,000m relay and a bronze in the women’s short track 1,000m. The men’s bobsleigh four-man team, headed by Kim Jin-soo (31), and the women’s curling team ‘5G’ are expected to come in fourth, keeping them in the running for medals. In terms of Asian nations, Japan is anticipated to be 11th with five golds, while China is predicted to be 12th with four golds. Norway (14 golds), the United States (13 golds), and Germany (12 golds) are expected to take the top three spots.
